If you’re searching for a destination that blends culture, luxury, adventure, and total relaxation, let me introduce you to one of our all-time favourite family trips: Oman πŸ‡΄πŸ‡²

Why Oman is Perfect for Families

Before diving into the itinerary, here’s why Oman works so well with kids:

  • Short-ish direct flight from the UK (around 7.5 hours)

  • Warm weather year-round β˜€οΈ

  • A mix of adventure + downtime (key when travelling with children!)

  • Luxury hotels that genuinely cater to families

  • Unique experiences (deserts, camels, souks) without overwhelming chaos

Our 7-Day Oman Family Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Muscat – Slow Start & Souk Stroll

We landed in Muscat after an overnight flight and headed straight to the
Sheraton Oman Hotel β€” booked using points (always a win!).

The day was intentionally low-key:

  • Pool time to recharge πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ

  • Relaxed lunch and early reset for the kids

In the evening, we explored:

  • Mutrah Souq

  • Mutrah Corniche

This was the perfect gentle introduction to Oman β€” think lantern-lit alleyways, spices, and sea views. A great free activity (minus a few irresistible souvenirs!).

Day 2: Culture & Mountains

We started the day with a visit to the breathtaking
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

✨ Top tip: Visit in the morning and dress modestly (covered shoulders & legs).

Then it was time for one of the most scenic drives of the trip β€” heading into the mountains to
Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort

Perched high in the Hajar Mountains, this resort is next-level luxury. Think:

  • Infinity pools overlooking canyons

  • Spacious family villas

  • Cooler mountain temperatures (a welcome break!)

Day 3: Into the Desert – Wahiba Sands Adventure

After breakfast, we drove to Bidiyah, the gateway to the desert, before heading into
Wahiba Sands

From there:

  • Met our host

  • Switched to a 4x4 for an epic dune drive πŸͺ

  • Arrived at our desert camp

The experience?

  • Sunset over endless dunes πŸŒ…

  • Traditional food and stargazing

  • A glamping tent (yes β€” with a proper bathroom πŸ™Œ)

The kids absolutely loved this β€” it felt like a real adventure without sacrificing comfort.

Day 4: Sunrise & Return to the Coast

We woke early for a magical desert sunrise (100% worth it), followed by breakfast before heading back to Muscat.

Next stop:
Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa

And just like that… we shifted into full relaxation mode.

Day 5 & 6: Resort Life Done Right

These were our slow, luxurious family days β€” and honestly, they were needed after all the exploring.

At the Shangri-La, we enjoyed:

  • Multiple pools + a lazy river 🌊

  • Beach time

  • Camel rides 🐫

  • Mini golf

  • Kids club (a lifesaver for parents!)

  • Incredible food and drinks 🍹

This is what I call balanced travel with kids β€” adventure followed by downtime.

Day 7: Easy Journey Home

We wrapped up our trip with a direct flight from Muscat to London Heathrow β€” just 7.5 hours, making Oman a very doable long-haul destination for families.

Final Thoughts: Is Oman Worth It?

Absolutely β€” and then some.

Oman offers:

  • A unique alternative to typical Middle East destinations

  • Authentic culture without overwhelming crowds

  • Luxury experiences that still feel meaningful

  • A perfect mix of exploration + relaxation

It’s rare to find a destination that ticks so many boxes for both kids and parents β€” but Oman truly delivers.
